King Cakes for a Cause

January 14, 2025 until March 04, 2025

Mardi Gras season is here, and that means King Cakes, parades, and good times! But this year, it’s also about something much bigger: helping to end childhood cancer. Common Bond Bakery & Bistro, The Hangry Houstonian (Danielle Dubois), and Brittany Hebert Franklin from Sky High for Kids have teamed up for their 5th year in a row to raise awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research through the sale of King Cakes.

Since 2021, this campaign has raised $14,255 and donated 800 King Cakes to kids undergoing treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital. Last year, TCH kicked off its own Mardi Gras celebration with an in-patient parade, and they even crowned a King and Queen—talk about spreading joy! Not only does this bring smiles to the kids, but it also supports Sky High for Kids, which does incredible work in funding cancer research and providing comfort to families.

This year, Common Bond is once again offering DIY King Cake Kits and Traditional King Cakes, with all proceeds benefiting Sky High for Kids. You can enjoy the fun of making your own King Cake at home with a DIY Kit, or send one directly to a child at Texas Children’s Hospital to brighten their day. On Mardi Gras Day (March 4), Common Bond and Sky High will deliver 200 King Cakes to the hospital to make sure every patient gets a little festive joy.

The DIY King Cake Kit comes with everything you need to create a delicious, traditional cinnamon King Cake: a King Cake, royal icing, purple, green, and gold sugars, and even a little plastic baby to hide inside. The kits are $25.99, and you can pre-order yours until February 27. Pick-up is available March 3-4 at Common Bond locations around Houston.

But that's not all—if you’re in the mood to skip the DIY route, Common Bond will also offer personal-sized King Cakes and a King Cake Latte from February 5 through March 4. If you need a larger one for the family or a celebration, full-sized Traditional Cinnamon and Raspberry Cream Cheese King Cakes are available for advance orders (72 hours required). And don’t forget: $5 from every King Cake sold goes directly to Sky High for Kids, supporting their mission to end pediatric cancer.

As Brittany Hebert Franklin, CEO of Sky High for Kids, puts it, “Mardi Gras is all about bringing people together. This campaign is our way of spreading that same festive spirit—bright colors, cheer, and traditions—to families who could really use a little extra joy. We’re excited that 200 patient families at Texas Children’s Hospital will get to experience all the fun of Mardi Gras thanks to our giving community!”

So, what are you waiting for? Get your King Cake kit or order a King Cake for yourself (or someone else!) and help bring some Mardi Gras magic to kids fighting cancer.
